Medical Imaging

EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training

PhD (Years 2 - 4)

As a CDT research student you will join a world leading interdisciplinary group of over a hundred scientists and clinicians. Our interdisciplinary nature, and location within one of the major teaching hospitals in the UK, provides a unique environment for our focus on rapid translation of cutting edge research into the clinic.

This foundation has recently been further developed through strong links with imaging equipment manufacturers and the pharmaceutical industry. Together with SMEs and university start-ups, they provide an important and industrially relevant environment, which fosters translational research and so improves patient care.

The focus of the 3 year PhD is to perform an interdisciplinary research project in medical imaging. The vast majority of students will have either (i) a strong clinical translational focus to their PhD through a clinical academic champion, and/or (ii) an industrial focus with part-funding of the PhD from an industrial partner, with the involvement of a senior industrial scientist providing additional mentoring/supervision and a period of industrial placement.

In parallel to the research project, the CDT will continue with a formal training programme of competencies with a focus in three different areas: clinical applications; healthcare economics; and enhanced personal skills.  This additional training is important as the students will also contribute to weekly journal clubs and seminars, which serve to provide an informal mechanism for the exchange of scientific ideas and stimulation of collaboration among the group.
