Bridging Industry and Academia to Drive Innovation

The EPSRC CDT in Smart Medical Imaging recently held an Industry and Academia Networking event at the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering.

Through a combination of bite-sized presentations and one-on-one discussions, the aim was to explore potential synergies and opportunities for collaborations that could lead to impactful, tailored solutions for pressing challenges in the rapidly evolving field of medical imaging.

Topics covered music heart theranostics by Professor Elaine Chew, 3D optical neural imaging for guiding brain surgery by Dr Yijing Xie, opportunities at the intersect of cancer and heart disease by Dr Sohaib Nazir and many more.

Guests were welcomed by an opening talk from Professor Sebastien Ourselin, the Head of the School and the Director of recently launched London Institute for Healthcare Engineering where the event was hosted. Professor Ourselin particularly emphasised how essential the partnership between academia and industry is to reach patients at scale.

Professor Alistair Young, the Director of the EPSRC CDT in Smart Medical Imaging, highlighted the role of close industry-academia partnerships in shaping future experts.

“Training the next generation of excellent PhD scholars in medical imaging requires close collaboration between industry and academia to ensure new advances have maximum impact and meet patient’s needs”

Industry funded PhD students were also given the opportunity to showcase their groundbreaking research, contributing to the vibrant exchange of ideas.
