What does a career in engineering look like across industry, healthcare, and academia? This question sat at the heart of a recent careers-focused panel event that brought together students and professionals for an open exchange of experiences.
Hosted by the EPSRC CDT in Smart Medical Imaging in collaboration with the EDI in Education Group, this interactive session created a platform for meaningful dialogue spanning disciplines, sectors and career stages.

The discussion drew in students from a wide mix of programmes, from Surgical & Interventional Engineering and Digital Twins, to MSc Healthcare Technologies and MedTech & Innovation, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of modern engineering.
Speakers shared candid and honest reflections on their professional journeys, offering perspectives that went beyond polished career narratives. They spoke about uncertainty, unexpected opportunities and the ever-evolving landscape of engineering roles today.
Their insights emphasised that career journeys are often shaped through exploration and a willingness to step into unfamiliar spaces, recognising that so-called “failure” is often one of the most effective ways to learn and grow.

Several key ideas resonated throughout the session:
– practical tips on what sets candidates apart,
– the importance of interdisciplinary thinking and adaptability in a rapidly changing job market,
– the highlights and complexities of roles in different sectors.

Following the discussion, conversations continued informally as students connected with speakers in a more relaxed setting allowing for deeper and more personal exchanges.
Events like this serve as an important reminder that career development is not just about outcomes, but about exploration. By opening up honest conversations between students and professionals, they help demystify career pathways and empower the next generation of engineers to make informed, confident choices about their futures.
