Engineering careers with sector-focused experts
Over 90 students, 6 experts and an endless exchange of insights that didn’t stop at the room’s walls. This was the essence of the Engineering Futures: Careers Panel hosted by the EPSRC CDT in Smart Medical Imaging and the EDI in Education Group at the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering on February 26.
The event featured a fully interactive discussion between students and sector-focused experts from Nvidia, Siemens Healthineers, Ultromics, LIHE, KCL Careers, and NHS, offering students a unique opportunity to directly interact with leading professionals across industry, healthcare, and academia.
Students from a range of programs attended, including those from the PhD Programmes in Smart Imaging, Surgical & Interventional Engineering, Digital Twins, MSc Healthcare Technologies, MedTech & Innovation, and MEng Biomedical Engineering. They eagerly engaged in the discussion, asking insightful questions throughout.

Panelists openly shared their diverse career journeys, discussing key turning points, challenges, and opportunities, with topics covering:
– transitioning from academia to industry,
– essential skills and experiences that make candidates stand out,
– navigating career paths beyond traditional roles,
– the most rewarding and challenging aspects of working in various sectors.
Following the panel, attendees participated in a networking reception, where they had the opportunity to engage further with speakers and ask individual questions.
The event provided students with valuable guidance on navigating their career paths. As demand for interdisciplinary expertise continues to grow, events like Engineering Futures play a crucial role in equipping students for impactful careers which will shape the future of healthcare.
