The cutting-edge AI research at the EPSRC CDT in Smart Medical Imaging was showcased through an interactive installation at the 2025 Great Exhibition Road Festival, engaging visitors of all ages and backgrounds in conversations about the future of AI in healthcare. The installation offered a hands-on introduction to how artificial intelligence and computer vision are being used to support medical imaging and neurological disorder diagnostics.
The project was developed by CDT alumni, Dr Virginia Fernandez and Dr Jyoti Mangal, with support from alumnus Dr Aishwarya Mishra and several current CDT students. Their collaborative effort highlighted the CDT’s strong interdisciplinary and cross-cohort community.

Designed as a two-room competitive buzzer game, the installation focused on AI motion detection technologies used in patient motion monitoring for neurological diagnostics. Visitors were invited to take part in interactive challenges that demonstrated how AI systems can identify and analyse movement patterns to support clinicians in diagnosing neurological conditions. The experience captivated hundreds of festival attendees while making complex research concepts accessible and engaging.
Alongside the interactive activities, the installation encouraged one-to-one discussions about public perspectives on AI and computer vision in healthcare. Visitors shared questions and concerns around topics such as governance, privacy, and patient confidentiality, while researchers explained how these issues are being actively addressed through ongoing research and responsible AI development practices.
The installation inspired the next generation of healthcare researchers and facilitated one-to-one conversations about the public’s perspectives and concerns on AI and computer vision in healthcare.
